Why prep protects your budget
Vocal recording at Noelpulse starts at €95 per hour or €420 for a half day. Minutes lost to lyric hunts or last-minute tech eat into takes. Bring text, tempo, and references and you reach flow faster — often avoiding a return visit.
We work with overdub workflow and monitoring; see Vocal recording. For slots and directions: Contact or +43 1 546 78 90. Hours: Monday to Friday 10:00–19:00, Saturday by appointment 11:00–16:00, closed Sunday..
The week before
Avoid marathon rehearsals and loud nights in the days ahead. Voices recover slower than it feels. If you must sing a lot, split into short sessions instead of one exhausting block.
Lock the lyrics: print them with breath marks, emphasis, and ad-lib spots. Live with the instrumental — entries and breaks should be automatic before you reach Wien. One or two reference tracks (not a endless playlist) help us understand tone and dynamics.
The night before
Sleep first. Short nights show up in pitch, stamina, and patience — yours and ours. Alcohol dries mucosa; heavy or spicy late meals can trigger reflux that shows up in the booth.
Pack deliberately: lyrics, charged instrumentals as WAV or AIFF, familiar headphones, water, throat lozenges without menthol if you use them. Check Take U4 to Pilgramgasse, then walk about 7 minutes via Rechte Wienzeile toward Stapelgasse. Alternatively tram 6 or 18 to Margaretengürtel / Kettenbrückengasse, then a short walk. and add travel buffer — arriving calm is part of prep.
Session day
Drink room-temperature water through the day; vocal fold hydration takes time. Many singers skip dairy in the last hours because it thickens mucus. Moderate coffee is fine for most voices — skip a large cup right before recording.
Eat lightly about two hours ahead. Empty stomach lacks support; a heavy meal restricts the diaphragm. Banana, dried fruit, or warm soup are booth classics for a reason.
Warm-up and breath
Warm up at home or in the first minutes while we route mics and pop filters. Body first: shoulders, neck, jaw. Then breath: long steady exhales on “s” or “f”. NG sirens, lip trills, easy scales in the song range — don’t jump to the highest chorus first.
For rap and speech: articulation drills slow, then fast. Ten to fifteen minutes is usually enough. Hoarseness or pain means stop and get medical advice — a moved session beats a strained recording.
In the booth at Noelpulse
Set headphone monitoring before chasing the “perfect” take. Too loud in the cans and you sing under; too quiet and you push. Many singers drop one ear to hear themselves in the room — tell us and we adjust levels so bleed stays low.
Keep pop-filter distance steady (about a hand’s width) and step back slightly on loud lines. Breaks are welcome: silence and water beat a run of tired takes. We choose from 28 mics to match your voice and style.
What we prepare
Before you arrive we load instrumental, tempo, and structure markers. We set the session for overdubs and test booth-to-control routing. During recording we flag strong takes so you focus on delivery.
Fatigue earlier than planned? We reprioritise: verses or low passages first, chorus to a follow-up or a reschedule within our 5-day cancellation window. Projects are stored 24 months — see Terms and conditions.
Checklist and next steps
- Final lyrics, known instrumental, named references.
- Rested, hydrated, light meal, warm-up done.
- Route planned (Take U4 to Pilgramgasse, then walk about 7 minutes via Rechte Wienzeile toward Stapelgasse. Alternatively tram 6 or 18 to Margaretengürtel / Kettenbrückengasse, then a short walk.), files and backup ready.
- Questions beforehand: [email protected] — we usually reply within 2 business days.
After tracking, many projects move to Plan mix budget and stems or straight to Mixing. This is general guidance, not medical advice; persistent hoarseness needs a clinician.
